Joshua Academy School Field Trip

Arts On Main welcomed 50 students, grades K-5, from Joshua Academy on Feb 12 where they explored our art galleries and had an art history lesson followed by an art activity.

In recognition of Black History Month, Coralee Young, AOM Director of Development and Community Relations, facilitated an educational session for students where they were introduced to Alma Woodsey Thomas (1891-1978). Thomas was a prominent African-American artist and teacher who resided in Washington, D.C. Her contributions to the art world have earned her the well-deserved recognition as a significant American painter of the 20th century.

Thomas's artwork from the 1960s and 1970s used vibrant acrylic strokes in shades of blue, red, green, and purple, which she called "Alma's Stripes." Thomas drew inspiration for her unique style from the color theories developed by Bauhaus artist Johannes Itten. Joshua Academy students created their own Thomas’ inspired paintings to display in their classrooms!
